2004-2005 Events
In September, ARWA brought in Leslie Wainger, an executive editor for Harlequin and Silhouette Books, for a one-day writing workshop called From the Editor's Head. Ms. Wainger conducted a special session on how to perfect your synopsis – that all-important tool needed to sell your work and she discussed her new book Writing a Romance Novel for Dummies, which outlines everything you need to know on your journey to becoming a romance novelist.

Our community partners for the event were Chapters/Indigo/Coles, Speers Photography & Design, Chinook Learning Services and Best Western. Speers Photography & Design took photos of the event. These pictures are posted in the Members' Area.

In October, ARWA brought in Margaret Carney and Margaret Learn. These freelance editors have served as senior editors for Harlequin lines and currently freelance for both Harlequin and Silhouette lines. These editors assessed and evaluated the completed and revised Pathways to Publications submissions, and provided detailed revision recommendations.

This workshop was part of the Pathways to Publication program, which included a series of workshops designed to cover all the necessary components of fiction writing, with the primary focus on the craft of writing. The Pathway to Publication was initiated with the purpose of attaining two ultimate goals: one, the knowledge and skill to produce a publishable novel and, two, the completion of a ready-to-submit proposal that would be comprised of at least one chapter and a synopsis.

In March, Barry Yzereef, accomplished playwright and director, professor of Fine Arts (Drama) at the University of Calgary, and true romantic at heart offered his approach to finding the beats of a scene and getting to its essence in his workshop on Breaking Down a Scene.

ARWA also held the comprehensive workshop Essential Tools of the Writer—Grammar and Style in March and April. The instructor, Margaret Chandler, teaches editing, writing and journalism at Mount Royal College and the University of Calgary, and is also a successful freelance writer and editor.
