7:00pm - 9:30pm A Writer's Guide to Business Planning with CJ Carmichael and Brenda Collins

Writing is fundamentally a business. That means any writer who wants to establish a career in the writing business has to be the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of their own company, Writer Inc. And like any other small business, you have to know where you are going before you can establish the route for getting there. A business plan will help you steer your writing business/career in a direction that will meet your goals and will be an aid to communicating with editors and/or agents.

Brenda Collins and CJ Carmichael will provide an overview of business planning using the career of multi-published romance author CJ Carmichael as an example. This talk is intended as a prerequisite for a hands-on Business Plan Development Workshop tentatively planned for January 2007 in which attendees will have an opportunity to develop their own unique business plan.

This workshop is expected to take approximately an hour and a general meeting will also be held this evening.

11 November 2006
Saturday
1:00pm to 4:00pm Natalie Goldberg's Writing Down the Bones presented by Jill Browne

Natalie Goldberg is probably well known to most ARWA members, but for those who need a reminder, she is most famous for writing the very popular book, Writing Down the Bones, as guidance for writers. Last fall (2005), Jill went to Arizona for a 2 1/2 day workshop led by Natalie.

Jill Browne will share her experience, and lead the ARWA group in exercises similar to what she experienced with Natalie. The afternoon will include a lot of writing so, in Jill’s words, “bring along a pen and paper that allow you to write fast.” If you have already read and studied Natalie’s books, you will have a certain perspective, but it is not necessary to do any advance reading. Jill says that she’s “going to try my hardest to recreate the experience rather than tell you all what it was like.”

So come with an open mind, prepared to fully engage in the experience.
